Man arrested for allegedly setting wife ablaze over burnt clothes in Kogi

A 33-year-old man, identified as Jacob Irewa, has been arrested by the Kogi State Police Command for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire following a domestic disagreement in Lokoja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

According to the police, the disagreement started after Irawo allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he no longer used, without his permission.

The suspect reportedly became angry, threatened his wife and allegedly fetched petrol from his motorcycle before setting her ablaze.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.

Following a report of the incident, operatives of the B Division Surveillance Team arrested Irewa and took him into custody.

The police said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he set his wife on fire.

The command has commenced further investigation into the incident, while the suspect is expected to be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
